Star Wars 7: The Return of Darth Vader

The narrative:

Kylo Ren, is deep in the electronic archives of the Empire's data banks. He enters one higher security clearance code after another, flicks through images until he finds one that interests him. He opens the video log and Senator Palpatine is seen walking through his quarters in distinct images also observed in Episodes 1-3.. Palpatine leaves the room. Kylo switches to other monitoring logs and quickly finds him. Palpatine is alone, but still looks around as if to make sure, he then turns and begins to speak to someone. Quickly Kylo flicks through the logs to find a better view. But when Kylo Ren zooms in there is no-one there with Palpatine and yet the senator continues to speak ardently deep in conversation with empty space. Someone walks in and Palpatine turns toward them. In frustration Kylo searches through many video logs looking for a similar event, he searches log after log until he eventually finds what he is looking for. He adjusts the sound settings and finally picks up Palpatine's voice as the senator speaks to someone invisible to the 3D view screen. Palpatines voice crackles through speakers saying; You will go to Tatooin and orchestrate the capture of Anakin's mother, Shmi Skywalker, by the Tusken Tribe. You will be responsible for her subsequent death at their hands. Kylo's brow furrows and he stares intently at the empty space Palpatine speaks into. Palpatine continues to speak saying, This is essential to my plans. When this is done return here and continue your work, you must penetrate his resistance and break Anakin's will.

Kylo is now bursing with intrigue. Whilst flicking through digital logs he hesitates when he discovers another recording where Senator Palpatine is seen in video logs by way of security cameras on the vessels he uses in Episode 1-3 talking once gain to someone unseen on the view screen at different intervals. Kylo’s curiosity is roused, yet on inspection of the recordings no one else appears to be in the room with Palpatine. Kylo begins to alter the light frequencies of the 3D view screen trying different combinations. His tampering with the frequencies begins to yield fruit. In one such security camera log Palpatine is seen facing what appears a hazy, floating apparition that causes the speakers to crackle. Kylo turns up the volume and hears Palpatine refer to the vaguely discernible apparition as Lord Vader. Kylo breaks into a sweat and with trembling hands he fiddles with the view screens instrument panel further adjusting the visual frequencies. The hooded, partially visible entity becomes visible in the playback and its eyes turn to the side just as Anakin Skywalker enters the room to engage Palpatine, it then hastily evaporates through the wall. The hairs on the back of Kylo’s neck rise, he wonders, how is it that Lord Vader and Anakin can be in the room at separate times when they are supposed to be the same person? Kylo takes a sharp intake of breath forgetting that he had stopped breathing.

Kylo's mind is in turmoil, deep in thought, going over what he has just seen and heard. He is able to discern that during Senator Palpatine’s recruitment of Anakin he solicited the help of a powerful incorporeal entity from the Dark Side; Vader . It would seem that Vader dwelt in the deep and vast shadow of the Dark Side. This is the incorporeal form the view screen vaguely captures when tuned to the right combination of frequencies. Vader worked with Palpatine to break Anakin, an unseen phantom wrapped like a snake around Anakins body twisting his mind and emotions at every opportunity, pulling him closer to the Dark Side of the Force at Palpatine’s bidding.  Kylo's piercing eyes gleam with incredulity Vader’s and Anakin; they were never the same person.

At some point in the video recordings sounds begin to crackle and the mysterious entity is heard telling Senator Palpatine that Anakin is proving too strong to pull completely to the Dark Side even from this phantom side of the Force. Though filled with static Kylo recognises Vader's deep rambling voice. Palpatine is angry and hisses how important Anakin and his abilities are to his plans. Kylo watches the weakly visible apparition, now clearly identified as Lord Vader in the video logs tell Palpatine to calm down in a terse, threatening tone, the speakers crackle. There is moment of fear in Palpatine’s eyes as he looks at the incorporeal Lord Vader, then he remembers his place, quickly recovers and stands his ground. Lord Vader turns away from Palpatine and says.  There is another way to bring Anakin into your service. Palpatine draws closer. Vader says ominously, I can take possession of the boy. Palpatine is taken aback at this proposal. He says to Vader, what you are suggesting, Lord Vader, is difficult, dangerous even for the most gifted of the hidden (incorporeal) Sith such as yourself. Would you be willing to put yourself, your life force at such great risk? Vader in his familiar deep voice [spoken by James Earl Jones] replies, I have been studying this technique for some time now, I believe I am ready . Palpatine says, Anakin is Jedi, he will resist your intrusion with every ounce of his being. Lord Vader replies, At his greatest moment of weakness I can overpower Anakin’s will, take his body, assume his identity by bringing myself as Darth Vader to the fore of his consciousness. Palpatine says, but for how long can you suppress Anakin and prevent him from exorcising you and taking his body back? You may be unable to suppress his strongest emotions, such as his love for Padme and those for whom he cares dearly, these may resurface in you Vader replies, I have prepared for this too. There is a long silence between them, they both turn to stare into the vastness of space through wide windows.

Kylo searches frantically through the mining logs and eventually cuts to the final scene where Anakin fights Obi-wan Kenobi. He adjusts the frequencies until Vader’s apparition becomes visible. Kylo reaches into the Dark Side of the Force to reveal to him the meaning of these scenes. At some point during Anakin’s fight with Obi wan Vader seizes the opportunity and transfers into Anakin’s physical body, but this inner turmoil is what distracts Anakin causing him to falter while on lower ground, lose the fight and fall into the volcanic magma that severely injures him. To Kylo’s amazement though Vader’s body is an apparition and still wrapped around Anakin, Vader’s face is also contorted with anguish and is screaming in unison with Anakin. The pain is so intense that it scars Lord Vader's incorporeal form that is now attached to Anakin’s being. Palpatine’s warning about the dangers of this kind of possession echo back into Vader’s mind and Kylo using the Force hears the words. The video logs switch to a scene with medical droids frantically trying to save Anakin. Vader is resilient, he suppresses Anakin during the operation as the mechanical parts are fixed in place. When the repaired body rises from the final operating table, it is no longer Anakin, but Darth Vader. Kylo's eyes are wide as he stares transfigured into the view screen.

Astounded with what he has unravelled Kylo searches the Force for answers and sees that Vader would only be later exorcised by Luke Skywalker and evicted from Anakin's body just before Anakin's death in Return of the Jedi. As warned by Palpatine, Lord Vader's incorporeal form is damaged and scarred by the burning and attempt to inhabit Anakin, a powerful Jedi. Twisted and broken Lord Vader's vanquished apparition retreated into the nether regions of the Dark Side. Kylo searches the Force desperately for answers and discovers Vader is  injured, scarred but very much alive. Armed with this new knowledge Kylo focuses all his mind and seeks Vader’s phantom out using the the Dark Side of Force.

Vader becomes aware of Kylo reaching out to him. Hearing of the new awakening of the force Vader is sought once again by the Sith. He is illusive and difficult to make contact with, but has grown more powerful in strength and knowledge. Convinced by Kylo Ren that he must return to help restore the Sith, Vador gives in, but opts once again to do so through possession as the video logs show he had done with Anakin. The body of a willing Sith is brought to him by Kylo, but when Vader attempts to possess it the memories of the agony and pain he experienced during Anakin’s possession come flooding back. The body of the Sith volunteer writhes in agony then bursts into flame, he has to abandon it. It burns up completely. Breathing heavily Vader’s incorporeal form vehemently tells Kylo Ren, to bring another one. Vader tells Kylo, he cannot hold back the memories of Anakin's pain, which at the time he experienced as if it were his own. It is a stigmata of sorts over which he has little control. Henceforth, anybody he tries to occupy will burn with injuries identically to those Anakin experienced when he lost the fight to Obi wan Kenobi. Kylo tells the incorporeal Lord Vader they still have the technology by which Anakin’s badly burnt body was resuscitated, in fact many improvements and enhancements have been made to it. Lord Vader understands and tells Kylo to bring another volunteer. Vader’s apparition floating in and out of visibility says to Kylo, I will occupy this one, ready the suite, its breathing apparatus and prepare to revive me. The possession ritual begins again. Vader’s apparition writhes around the volunteer entering and leaving orifices in his body. The volunteer begins to scream. He spontaneously bursts into flame.  There is a struggle to put out the stigmata-like flames, the body writhes. Medical droids enter the area. They forcibly hold it down, bind its limbs and wheel it quickly to the operating theatre where just as the flames subside the mechanical parts are unattached, the breathing apparatus is inserted and then finally the helmet.

Outside the theater Kylo stirs, he listens and hears a steady, familiar heavy breathing he has heard on many video logs. Lord Vader emerges through sliding doors. Kylo is astounded and drops to one knee bowing his head. Darth Vader stands before him, resurrected triumphantly in his new and improved suite, gleaming, reminiscent of the older one he once wore.

Darth Vader’s deep, familiar, living voice fills the expansive corridor and says; Kylo Ren, rise, my new apprentice!

With the ability to transfer his incorporeal being through this same process from one body to another, Darth Vader is now immortal, albeit doomed to forever have to wear the dark apparatus that is his suite and life support system. The ominous sound of Vader's Imperial March is heard. As Kylo walks in stride beside Vader, he digests the secret, astounding revelation that Anakin Skywalker was never Darth Vader.

The scene changes. A head is shown bowed, it is giving off a strange light, gently shimmering. It holds a stick tracing through plush translucent grass that is giving off a heavenly light. The bowed head rises and Master Yoda's eyes come into view. There are no wrinkles, long dark locks of hair are braided behind him, this is a very young Master Yoda, his glistening youthful eyes gaze across a meadow and rest finally on a Jedi lying back in the grass. His expression is tranquil and a blade of grass hanging form his mouth quivers as his lips move. Beside him is a lovely young woman. She runs a hand through his hair. Yoda's expression is grave. He sighs and calls to the couple, Anakin. Padme! They look up towards him.Yoda says gravely, there is a new awakening in the Force. An old enemy stirs to move against it. I fear, that we cannot rest here in paradise...for there is grave danger afoot and.....help, we must.

Padme rises and strides toward Master Yoda. She says to him, But Master Yoda we are no longer part of the physical world, to them we are deceased. Anakin joins her. Deceased? Yoda repeats the word with a little contempt and says, We are more alive than they may ever understand. Anakin sits down beside Yoda. Master Yoda, he says, I have never heard of anyone returning from the incorporeal zone back to the physical world. Yoda grunts, Indeed one may appear at times as an apparition, but the Sith have an ancient evil technique for doing this, they take possession of an unwary person in the physical zone and live. Crude it is, a Jedi will not. Padme looks at Yoda intently and asks, Then how would we return? Yoda replies, Here, we are closer to the Force, much more powerful than you may think. The Jedi, too have an ancient technique. We focus and centre the Force within us and condense particles that reassemble a physical form. Anakin’s eyes light up, he says to Yoda, Master you must teach us to do this if we must return to help our friends. Yoda looks at him and says, At first you will be able to hold the physical form only for short intervals, but as your skill grows a physical form you will hold for much longer. Many advantages and new abilities there are, for one able to shift to and from the physical and incorporeal zone. Anakin pulls the blade of grass from his lips saying, Vader is strong and he is not alone, we will need others from here to join us in this task. Yoda nods, Indeed, but the incorporeal zone is not like the physical world Anakin, anyone who desires not to be found, will remain hidden in this place. Padme raises her arms, she says in excitement, Master Yoda but then why do the Jedi never return after they die? Yoda sighs, Padme, he says, Look around you. No-one, not even a Jedi would leave this place to return to a former physical world filled with hate, suffering and death, and even if they could many know not how. But Vader has returned and now no-one is safe. A new era in the Force must begin, and the world, for a time, must change. Therefore, to others here we must reach and to the physical zone we must learn to return, teach you…I will.

A new era begins..

Fan made fiction.

Separating Darth Vader from Anakin Skywalker is likely to be one of the most critical strategies of the Franchise. Creative writing cannot thrive in a strait jacket. Liberating Vader from Anakin frees the writers to explore a deeper, bolder and back in your face re-introduction of Vader without trashing and tarnishing all the hard work and gains of restoring Anakin that are the focus of New Hope. One cannot thrive without diminishing the other, therefore, its best to perform literary surgery and separate the two. Free Anakin to be the good Jedi he was always meant to be on the sdie of the Resistance don't destroy the entire hopeful energy of Star Wars he represents, but free Vader from him and free Darth to be the bad ass who returns to entertain everyone once again: Anakin Skywalker was never Darth Vader. A deep sad secret of the Sith previously unknown and revealed SW Episode 8, is that their modus operandi is possession and the use of incorporeal spirits to manipulate and control matter, the Dark side of the Force. When the Sith pull a person to the Dark side it is, and essentially has always been through the hidden use of possession. To become a Sith is to be possessed by a sinister incorporeal entity that remains hidden in the host as was the case with Anakin. Possession is the way for the Franchise to go due to the fact that it is something that is common knowledge to the general public. It is therefore the embellishment of an idea people can relate to rather than a narrative they will find difficult to process when Anakin and Darth are separated in order to reboot these characters and make them commercially viable again. Possession facilitated through the manipulation of matter by incorporeal Sith also makes sense because Darth Plagueis.Darth PlaguPossPosseeDarth Plagueis is able to use the same method to bring the dead back to life or as Palpatine told Anakin, prevent a person from dying. He just didn't tell Anakin the whole truth which is that he brings people back by making them possess the living, in a slightly zombie like state, which is why many Sith tend to look odd, like walking corpses or disfigured. This is what Darth Sidious offered to do for Padme and Anakin's child. If Anakin had known this sinister detail he would not have given in to Palpatine's attempts to recruit him to the Dark Side. However, by telling these mistruths and using the incorporeal Vader to invade and possess Anakin he was able to corrupt him. The Jedi manipulate light which they use for all their Force abilities. Even when they manipulate the physical world it is from their belief all matter is made from light. They raise themselves up to be light itself. Which is why some disappear when they fall. Unlike the Sith who gain immortality using possession, taking over a victim's body and mind, the Jedi gain immortality through light. The Sith have brought about inmbalance in the Force by making themselves immortal through possession Mastered by Darth Plagueis.Darth PlaguDarth Plagueis, they have the upper hand at present. and have all but killed off the Jedi. But, when Luke brings about the ability to bring the light back into the material world, that is open the doorway between the physical world and the incorporeal world that brings the Jedi back he will have restored balance in the Force and fulfilled this prophecy. Darth Plagueis. Darth Plagueis.

Bringing together the old world of Star Wars and the new World of the Awakening by removing the partition between life and death to enter a new domain that involves ghosts (as the narrative above does) is very important and necessary next step in the Star Wars Franchise. How do we know this? This next step is made clear in Return of the Jedi, at the very end where the audience is shown the apparitions of 3 deceased Jedi, namely Obi-wan Kenobi, Master Yoda and Anakin. The Jedi have long viewed death as merely a change in constitution but the story of where they go afterwards and these mysterious new worlds that are alien even to Star Wars itself are the right direction. This direction is also the right one to take due to the fact that episodes 1-3 were made recently and nearly the entire cast is still available to fullfil the role of those who now dwell in the "apparition zone" which in reality is merely like a hyper jump except using frequencies presently unexplored in the technology of the current Star Wars tale. This story line, very importantly, allows the Franchise to bring back any enemy or friend, for example, Darth Vader, Obi-wan Kenobi etc that are household names. Managing how these worlds interact determines how and when these characters appear and can determine the next great chapter in the Star Wars Franchise. The apparition zone also gives an opportunity to introduce new worlds and civilizations, and to reintroduce an element of horror that is a very important part of the original Star Wars Franchise.
